I love this piece! I must admit, sometimes I even let my inner voice speak out loud (but only when I'm alone). It's usually kind and perceptive, like yours, unlike other inner voices which tend to jump on my head. You've given such a wonderful insight into how to tap into this voice regularly. Thank you for your lab - I will be using the results of your experiments

The inner voice has lost some of its previous cachet from the days on "men's groups" etc. But it is indeed a staunch ally worthy of consultation-- thanks for the reminder.

I like to think that it's still possible. Look at those who've gone before. Margaret Mitchell was rejected before published. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance like 100 times. Even JK Rowlings was rejected a bunch. I know, I know...protect your heart. Who said, "you have to dream before your dreams can come true." You had to have dreamt to do all that work. It's kind of why I play the lottery...while the number hasn't been called yet, I could still be a winner. Hope is all we have.

Thank you for the lab work. We appreciate you! Along the same lines, a phrase I sometimes tell myself is "let my future self lead me now." It always invites an internal listen.

Amy, I've been in a lot of writing groups where people agonized over their writing, always beating themselves up because they felt their words were never quite right. After a while of listening to that sort of writing self hate, I would usually tell them, "Don't worry about it. No one's ever going to read it anyway." In other words, a writer should write for himself and forget about the critics. It always makes me feel better to approach writing like that. Thanks for the insightful post. SW

Thanks Amy "What’s the worst that can happen?" I hate that question. Because no matter what I come up with, you can be assured there's something worse : )
