I agree entirely. I think of it as building a body of work. You look around after five years, and you see the books you've written, the interviews you've given, the blogs you've authored, the networking you've done, and all of it is part of the whole. And all of it puts you in a better position to capitalize on the next opportunity. My hat's off to you for being in the game because as a friend of mine says, "You must be present to win."
