A book to help creative people manifest an artistic life
I wrote it in a trance, as if possessed by an all-consuming idea.
I wrote it as if I were a dam and a great surge of water was about to burst forth.
I wrote it as a way to speak out—to you, to myself, to all of us tortured by a doubting conscience.
I wrote it to put some love and empathy and encouragement into the world…because I can at least do that, if nothing else.
A brief excerpt
Doubt is a story you tell yourself, often in secret.
The secret telling, all that yelling deep inside, gives the story power.
Power over you. In you.
Your doubt story, each chapter voiced unbidden, crowds out other
stories that are far more important.
For instance:
The story about how your craft brings you joy.
The story about the unexpected discoveries you make—
all that serendipity.
The story about your wishes and visions.
The story about sharing your art with the world.
The story of an ending—a happy ending.
Take back your story. Tell doubt to be seen but not heard. Let the
voices in your head tell new stories about your life as an artist.
Assert your power over doubt: It is your right.
For all of us
This is not a how-to book. It isn’t a workbook. It isn’t a set of personal essays. It is a book you will want to dip in and out of. To keep by your bedside or on your desk or in your studio.
It is a book that will, on every page, remind you that you are not alone with your doubts. These feelings are a shared enterprise.
And on every page, you will be reminded that you hold the keys to your artistic identity—you can make this happen, and you will.
This is a book full of hope, and we all need as much hope as we can get right now—especially creative people who are constantly berated by our culture to do more, do better, do differently…
When all you need to hear is to do you, your way, in your own time.
I’ll come right out and say it: I want you to buy this book—for yourself, yes, but also for the other creative people you know who are struggling in secret, afraid to confess their outlandish desires to dream impractical dreams…
This book, in particular, is designed to be consumed, absorbed, integrated within your artist’s soul.
Perhaps you will be inspired to write (or paint or draw or sculpt) your own responses to the passages within.
Please read it, share it, and let me (and the world) know how it makes you feel.
Let’s turn the world into a place where artists commune and communicate, lift one another up, offer empathy and encouragement, and above all, make the art we are destined to make.
Coming in January: Chat about Doubt Monster
I will host chats on Substack for readers to share reactions, steps they’re inspired to take, and to talk back to the messages in the book. Watch this space.
